Please explain...

Those of you with the motivation to get up and work out early (like, dark early) and who are still breastfeeding...WTF??? Do you just pump and have your husband give a bottle if the kid wakes up while you're gone? Do your kids somehow sleep past 7am reliably? Do you feed before you go and your little angel goes back to sleep?

Not that I'm in any danger of actually getting up early to work out. And frankly, if you comment and answer these questions I might lose my excuses of "Big leaky boobs, awake kid, completely torn about whether I want her to have a bottle except when I'm at work."

But this summer I'm going to have to consider this as an option.

I am past the nursing stage with my kids but when I had nursing babies, it was the priority. I would wake up early (still dark) and work out at home to tapes, eliptical, whatever. If baby woke up, I would stop and nurse back to sleep. (Yes, sometimes I felt really irritated) Then I would shower and plan on a longer nursing session before heading out to work. It wasn't easy, I will admit that. But, the bonding that came from nusing in the long run, made those years seem so small now that my kids are older. Plus, as the kids got older, my workouts improved!

Zach now sleeps until 7 so my routine is to get up at 4 and pump and if he wakes up while I'm gone the husband gives him a bottle but usually he gets the bottle I pumped at 4 when he wakes up at 7. When his sleeping habits weren't as predictable if he was awake at 3-4, I'd feed him, try to pump whatever was left so there'd be a bottle if he woke up while I was gone and go work out. If he wasn't up when I got up at 4 I'd pump and then leave the bottle. I always get rid of the big leaky boobs first thing when I wake up.

Ah yes, another reason why I'll never work out at 0 dark 30. :o)

Do you mean because they are full? I would pump.

Since having a baby I've never been able to get it together to work out in the morning before work (although pre-baby I liked sunrise mtn bike rides...).

But when Austin was around the age Andra is now, I would put him to bed at night around 7:30 or 8:00, then wake him to feed him before I went to bed around 10:30, which kept him from waking around midnight to eat. People warned me, "never wake a sleeping baby," but he would always go right back down and it worked great for us.

Anyway, you might see if she will wake just enough to eat and then go back to sleep at the time that you're getting up to work out. Otherwise, I'd second what others have said - pump before you go work out so you will be comfortable and Fred will have milk for her when she gets up.

I hear what you're saying about maybe not wanting her to have bottles except when you're at work - I mostly felt that way too - and only you know what's right for you guys...But I did find as Austin got bigger, I was more willing to let Tim give him a bottle even when I was there and it was good for all of us for me to have some me-time and them to have some daddy-baby bonding.

Sometimes I get up scary early (4 or 430) and just run. My full breasts aren't sore to do that without pumping (my full is still small). Then I shower and nurse. Otherwise I get up at 5 or 530 and feed Claire in bed and am on my run by 630.

Someday, I'm sure I'll think I was nuts. Somedays, I already do.

Hey Clare,
Just catching up on blogs. Not sitting in front of a computer all day, is really affecting my blogging life :-)
I haven't even considered a morning exercise. My boobs are like a HUGE bag of walnuts when I get up. Then it can take me 45 minutes to feed. I can't even consider running/working out before I've emptied them. I'd be endanger of redecorating everything with breast milk :-)
How long do you plan on nursing for? I was thinking 3.5 months and then express until my milk supply dries up.

good question! i have no answer, but i figure i would just feed harper around 5 am, then workout after and if she needs to eat while i am gone, G can just give her a bottle.
